Fjallraven was founded in the 1960s by Åke Nordin. Born in Örnsköldsvik, on Sweden’s High Coast, in 1936, this provided the ideal countryside and environment for a young Åke to explore which would in turn plant the seed for Fjallraven Kanken bags and backpacks.
The Story Behind Fjallraven Kanken Bags
Created from a need to create a backpack that could carry plenty of gear, but one that would still sit comfortably on his back, Åke, armed with his mother’s sewing machine and father's tools, set about creating a wooden-framed backpack in his basement. 10 Years later in that same basement, Fjallraven was founded and the first product (a backpack) was ready for sale.
In 1978 the Fjallraven Kanken Backpack was born, and to this date continues with the same design. Only now with over 55 colours to choose from and many slight variations available to the original. Kanken backpacks have become a true icon that when combined with their practicality and the vivid range of colours are now one of the most recognizable bags on the market worldwide.
